Insulating a Deck: What to Do When Staying Cool Makes You Hot

The inspiration for this week’s post comes from a co-worker of mine. A few weeks ago he came to me for some advice because his air conditioning unit is located below his deck and generates a considerable amount of heat.

 

The hot air quickly rising upward makes relaxing on the deck quite uncomfortable!

 

We are dealing with two problems here:

1. The air conditioning unit generates heat, which naturally radiates upward.

2. To make the situation worse, the fan blows all of the heat up to the deck.

 

EcoFoil reflective insulation stops radiant heat.EcoFoil is the perfect solution for insulating a deck because it solves both problems at the same time: it reflects 97% of radiant heat back to its source, and it acts as a barrier to disperse the airflow and divert it away from the space above.

 

In this instance he used our white faced reflective insulation. The white polyethylene face is waterproof and UV protected, and faces upward to protect the foil side from the elements. The foil side faces down towards the air conditioner to reflect radiant heat away from the deck.

 

Installation was simple; the insulation was stapled into place and furring strips were added for extra support. The goal was to force the hot air to exit the underside of the deck horizontally instead of vertically.

 

The results?

 

Well, my friend was pleased the EcoFoil reduced the flow of hot air dramatically. He reports that he can no longer feel hot air coming up from the air conditioning unit.  To see EcoFoil in action watch this short video:
